‘Young Sherlock’ teaser gives Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective an explosive origin story

Everyone knows the tales of Sherlock Holmes, but who was Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famed detective before he donned the deerstalker? That’s what Prime Video‘s upcoming Young Sherlock endeavors to find out.

Directed and executive produced by Guy Ritchie, who also helmed the Robert Downey Jr.-led Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Young Sherlock stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin (After) in the titular role. And based on the show’s first teaser trailer, his take on Sherlock is a full-on smooth-talking rapscallion.

In Young Sherlock, Holmes is a disgraced young man studying at Oxford in the 1870s. Soon, according to the show’s official synopsis, “he finds himself wrapped up in a murder case that threatens his liberty.”

With the game officially afoot, Sherlock sets out on a globetrotting adventure to crack his first case. Cue the explosions, fisticuffs, and gunfights.

But Sherlock isn’t the only classic Doyle character getting an origin story. Sherlock’s nemesis, James Moriarty (The Wheel of Time‘s Dónal Finn), is also in the picture. In the trailer, the pair even strike up a friendship. So what will sour their relationship?

According to the teaser, it may be the aforementioned deerstalker hat. As Sherlock moves to try one on, Moriarty intervenes. “If you start wearing a hat like that, I will no longer be friends with you,” he says.

Case closed!

Young Sherlock also stars Zine Tseng, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Max Irons, and Colin Firth.

Young Sherlock premieres March 4 on Prime Video.
