Pump.fun launches BOOST mode to recycle dead liquidity through token burns


Pump.fun has introduced BOOST mode, a new launch mechanism that automatically converts “dead liquidity” into token buybacks and burns, aiming to strengthen newly launched memecoins after they migrate from the platform’s bonding curve. The feature became the default launch mechanism for all eligible new tokens on July 21 and is designed to improve capital efficiency by putting otherwise inaccessible liquidity back to work.

The Solana-based memecoin launchpad estimates that more than $100 million worth of liquidity becomes permanently stranded every year under its previous migration model. Instead of leaving those funds locked indefinitely inside liquidity pools, BOOST mode redirects them into automatic market purchases that are immediately burned, creating buying pressure while reducing the circulating supply of newly launched tokens.

BOOST mode gives “dead liquidity” a new purpose

The most significant change introduced by BOOST mode takes place immediately after a token completes its bonding curve and migrates to PumpSwap.

Previously, when a memecoin graduated from Pump.fun’s bonding curve, approximately 20% of the migration liquidity remained permanently locked inside the newly created liquidity pool. While this mechanism helped ensure liquidity remained available for trading, a portion of the SOL or USDC could never be withdrawn or redeployed, even if every token holder eventually sold their position.

Pump.fun describes these permanently trapped assets as “dead liquidity.” According to the platform, the mechanism leaves more than $100 million locked across migrated tokens every year, capital that effectively sits idle despite remaining inside liquidity pools.

BOOST mode is designed to recycle those dormant funds instead of allowing them to remain unused.

For every eligible migration, the protocol redirects approximately 17.6 SOL for SOL trading pairs or around $2,516 for USDC pairs into buying the newly migrated token. Rather than executing one large purchase, the protocol spreads the orders over the first five minutes after migration using a Time-Weighted Average Price (TWAP) strategy, helping reduce the impact of a single large market order.

Once the purchases are completed, every token acquired through BOOST is immediately burned, permanently removing it from circulation. The result is a combination of temporary buying pressure and a lower token supply, achieved without introducing any new liquidity or external funding.

Pump.fun says the new mechanism increases liquidity efficiency by turning previously unusable capital into active market demand while leaving the overall trading experience unchanged.

Enabled automatically for eligible tokens

BOOST mode is now the default migration mechanism for all eligible tokens launched on Pump.fun after the rollout on July 21. Creators do not need to activate the feature, and traders continue using the same bonding curve and PumpSwap infrastructure throughout the launch process.

The platform noted that tokens which migrated before the activation time, as well as projects launched through Pump.fun’s Mayhem system, are excluded from the new mechanism.

Community debates whether BOOST will make a difference

The launch has generated mixed reactions across the crypto community, with supporters viewing the feature as a more efficient use of capital while critics question whether the mechanism will significantly affect token performance.

Some traders argued that redirecting approximately 17.6 SOL into buybacks may not meaningfully influence the price of tokens that have already reached market capitalizations of around $30,000 or more. Others suggested that, although permanently locked, the liquidity still contributed to the size of liquidity pools across the broader Solana memecoin ecosystem.

Json, the platform’s Head of Content, said many observers misunderstand what dead liquidity actually represents. According to him, the locked assets were never usable trading liquidity because they could not be withdrawn or reallocated under any circumstances. BOOST therefore does not remove liquidity from the market but instead transforms previously inaccessible capital into real buy orders before permanently burning the acquired tokens.

The platform believes this approach could help reduce the sharp sell-offs that often occur immediately after migration, a period when many early investors take profits and newly launched memecoins frequently experience heightened volatility.

A new experiment in post-migration token economics

BOOST represents one of Pump.fun’s most notable infrastructure updates this year, focusing on improving how capital is used rather than changing the token launch process itself. Instead of relying on new incentives or additional liquidity, the protocol simply reallocates funds that were previously locked forever.

Whether the mechanism delivers meaningful improvements remains to be seen. While automatic buybacks and token burns could provide stronger price support during the critical minutes following migration, some market participants note that the buying program lasts only five minutes, meaning tokens may still face significant selling pressure once the purchases conclude.

Even so, BOOST introduces a different approach to post-launch token economics by attempting to reduce capital waste while strengthening newly migrated tokens. If the mechanism performs as intended, it could become an important feature for Pump.fun as the platform continues competing to attract new memecoin launches on Solana.

Following the announcement, PUMP, Pump.fun’s native token, traded largely unchanged, suggesting investors are waiting for real-world data to determine whether BOOST can consistently improve the performance of newly launched memecoins in the weeks ahead.
